Easy Ways to be an Everyday Environmentalist

Think climate change is too big of a problem to solve? Think again and Think Green. Small changes everyday makes a huge difference. We can all lower carbon emissions by following these energy saving tips.
RECYCLE & REUSE:
Recycle excess food, fruit peels and coffee grounds etc. in the compost for the garden. Always recycle paper, magazines, newspaper, plastic, aluminum, batteries and toner cartridges. Products made from recycled paper, glass, metal and plastic reduce carbon emissions because they use less energy to manufacture than products made from completely new materials. Recycling paper also saves trees and lets them continue to reduce climate change naturally as they remain in the forest, where they remove carbon from the atmosphere.
BUY ORGANIC PRODUCE MADE WITHIN YOUR COUNTRY                                                           If you shop at a supermarket, the food you buy may have traveled in a plane from the other side of the world, burning fossil fuels the entire trip. Shop at a local farmers markets or organic food store and you will find fresh, organic and healthy food, and help save our climate.
BUY RENEWABLE ENERGY                                                                                                                 Most utilities generate electricity from renewable energy sources with solar panels, windmills and other technologies. If your utility offers renewable energy, buy it. If not, enquire about using clean energy or switch to a provider that does.
USE ORGANIC, BIODEGRADABLE DOMESTIC CLEANING PRODUCTS                                    Use cleaning products that are organic, biodegradable or a natural alternative. It’s better for the environment and better for your health, For example, you don’t want nasty chemical residues of dishwashing liquids or dishwasher powders on your dishes that you eat off everyday. By using Bi-Carb and Vinegar to clean with it’s a lot cheaper. Using organic, biodegradable detergents ensure a more gentle wash on your clothes and reduces chemical waste in our water.
PLANT NATIVE TREES                                                                                                            According to nature.org Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and use it as their energy source, producing oxygen for us to breathe. A tree in the temperate zone found between the tropics and the polar circles can remove and store 700 to 7,000 pounds of carbon over its lifetime. A tree that shades a house can reduce the energy required to run the air conditioner and save an additional 200 to 2,000 pounds of carbon over its lifetime.
TURN DOWN THE HEAT                                                                                                             Heating and air conditioning draw more than half of the energy that a home uses. Turn down the heat or air conditioning when you leave the house or go to bed. Install a programmable thermostat that can save up money and carbon.
 KEEP YOUR TIRES INFLATED
Your car get better petrol mileage when the tires are fully inflated because it will burn less petrol and emit less carbon. Check your car monthly to ensure that the tires are fully inflated.
LIMIT MEAT IN YOUR DIET – IT’S THE GREENER OPTION
According to the FAO newsroom in their 2006 Report from The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization found that the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all the planes, trains and automobiles on the planet.
The methane emissions from cows have 21 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide. But that's not the only problem.
More and more forests are being cleared for pastures to feed all these animals. The Earth’s natural method of storing carbon disappears as the trees disappear
And the problem is getting worse. According to the FAO, annual per capita meat consumption in developing countries has doubled from 31 pounds in 1980 to 62 pounds in 2002. The FAO predicts that meat production will double by 2050.
We can stop this by cutting out red meats and reducing other meats from our diets. Literally Greening your diet is a simple way to make a big difference in your health and the environment.
  USE COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS.
These energy-efficient bulbs help fight climate change because they reduce the amount of fossil fuels that utilities burn. You will save 100 pounds of carbon for each incandescent bulb that you replace with a compact fluorescent, over the life of the bulb.
 TELECONFERENCE INSTEAD OF FLYING
For office meetings, if you can telephone or videoconference, you will save time, money, and carbon emissions. Airplanes pump carbon emissions high into the atmosphere.
 NO WASTE PACKAGING
Seek out no-waste packaging. Look for products with recyclable packaging and avoid tetrapak, styrofoam and unnecessary bags.  Don't buy products in clamshell packing unless you absolutely have to.
 USE REUSABLE OR BIODEGRADABLE BAGS
Keep at least 3 reusable bags in the boot. That way, it won't matter if you forget to bring bags out with you . When shopping refuse plastic bags and at home use biodegradable garbage bags.

Style Report - 70's Staying Alive

We all want that vintage vibe in our wardrobe- that essence of an era gone by. And we want to hand pick the sleekest, sexiest, and most stylish looks from it. And this time, it’s the 1970s that are due for a reinterpretation. With the revival of 70’s fashion there are two main aesthetics; the bohemian and the sophisticated glamour. So this means you can get lots of wear out of your key seventies pieces.

By day it’s all about clean yet voluminous silhouettes, and earthy ’70s colour palettes. Key Items:
High waisted wide-leg pants or flares belted in.
Neat bow-blouses, with billowing or bishop sleeves.
Hot Pants - the ultimate ’70s item.
And add to the effect by layering over beaded necklaces or a vest.

Accessories are key when it comes to creating a ’70s look. Wear:
Exotic Jewels; lots or rings with bold stones, neat piles of bangles, and long pendant necklaces and strings of beads.
My Favourite are super-high platform heels, peep toes or wedges
(OMG!)

I also love Big Brown Sunnies
A Floppy Hat in the day
Smart, high quality bags like a leather satchel for day, and for night a small bag with a long strap.
This nine west leather bag is one of my favourite everyday smaller bags at the moment.
By night you have the look-at-me shimmering fabrics and cuts that either tightly hug or sensually drape over the body. Choose:

High sheen fabrics with a ’70s disco-inspired edge, like lurex or silk; anything with a metallic thread.
A smart printed jump suit.
A ruffled neckline under a brocade blazer or tuxedo jacket.
An interesting alternative that covers yet exposes is the tail hem dress.
The Ultimate ’70s night time glamour is the Long, slinky gown with draping low necklines and or leg slits.
And complete the whole look with the right hair style; for a boho look keep hair long and flowing and for sophisticated look a sleek bob or sultry curls.
Now to pull off the 70’s sophisticated look, there’s an underlying confidence to this trend that is essential. Even the more demure looks need to be carried off with an air of sexuality and a sort of defiant independence and boldness.
At night time this hint can turn into a statement: think Bianca Jagger at Studio 54, in a slinky gown, ivory cigarette holder in hand, and you’ve got the picture!

Terra Nova Premiere & Wrap Party

So Last night on Channel 10 at 8:30 Fox’s Terra Nova roared into existence in Australia with a two-hour premiere! I play Jess Ogawa the resident nurse who is Dr. Elizabeth Shannon’s right hand.

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet basically in the future circa 2149 the Earth is dying, it is overdeveloped and over populated. So the only hope for survival is in the distant past. Fortunately scientists unexpectedly discover a fracture in time that makes it possible to construct a portal into primeval history, which gives humanity a second chance to rebuild civilization and get it right this time. However all is not rainbows and butterflies you have man eating dinosaurs, giant bugs and renegade rebels who are intent on destroying this paradise before it even begins- Not everyone has the same idea on how to save mankind.

Make sure you watch the show on Sunday Nights in Channel 10 it is EPIC. Let me know what you think :)
We Partied Hard at the season 1 wrap party over the weekend in Broadbeach. At Mecca the drinks were flowing and we ate delectable morrocan horderves. We had a Dj outside and they even blocked off the street for us so we could have our dance off. I have to say that Naomi, Christine and Matt had some fierce dance moves. Even Slang got up and danced while the Director Jon Cassar busted out his Salsa Skills. But the night didn’t end there we went to East and Love and needless to say we partied until the sun came up.

Here are a few of my pics of the night

Spring Fashion - Style Report 1

This Season Get ready to have all eyes on you, as we embrace a spectrum of BRIGHT COLOUR! Think Juicy Orange, Flamingo Pink, Canary Yellow, and Electric Blue.

And with these bright colours, one of the hottest trends for this season is the technique of Colour Blocking.
Essentially it’s putting blocks of solid color next to each other in an outfit.
The Spring 2011 Collection by Gucci I adore!

·
So to make a colour block outfit; take 2 to 3 bold colours and pair them together. And remember Combining Composite Colours work best.

Now Clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories can feature already colour blocked designs:
(Got this great pic from the blogger frompariswithlovex)
But to avoid looking like a Rubik’s cube- if your wearing an already colour blocked item, keep the rest of your outfit SIMPLE.

For those of you that are afraid of colour- Don’t be! Because you can Employ this technique to your advantage to hide any flaws and highlight your assets.
You can see in the Pic below that these curvaceous ladies are working it!

As we all know dark colours have a slimming effect, same thing applies when colour blocking. So what you can do is use a darker column of colour down the torso or wear open a lighter coloured cardigan or jacket.

Generally a colour-blocked outfit will work for you if you stick to the usual rules for your body shape, For Example;
If you are pear shaped, stick to wearing darker colors on your bottom half.
If you are apple shaped, avoid horizontal blocks of colour around your stomach and instead highlight legs with brightly coloured pants.
If you are an hourglass, you can color block around the waist to highlight your womanly figure.
Colour Blocking is a fabulous trend to flaunt this Season but make sure you stick to 4 colours max and keep accessories to a minimum!

Gone is the season of muted tones - Its time to paint the town in as many colors as you wish!

My Top 10 Beauty Tips

Tip #1: SMILE – You look more attractive and you attract goodness into your life!
Tip #2: Establish a Daily Skin Care Routine Using ORGANIC Products-
Twice a Day:
1. Cleanse
2. Tone
3. Skin Condition
4. Moisturise
5. Eye Gel
6. During the day also use Sunscreen (use products especially for the face)

Weekly:

2-3x a week Exfoliate after cleansing
1x a week either a purifying or hydrating mask depending on what your skin needs
Tip #3: Always wear Sunscreen. Nothing ages you faster than the sun - so protect those fresh exfoliated skin cells everyday!!! Even when the sun is behind the clouds - you get even more sun exposure on cloudy days than clear.  When you are having fun in the sun, remember to reapply about every 2 hours! My Favourite is De Vita Spf 30+ Solar Body Block.
Tip #4: Moisturise Day and Night! To keep your skin smooth & supple. Massage it into your skin so that it re-activates your blood circulation and helps reduce cellulite. A Body Mist is perfect for girls on the go and don’t forget about Hand Crème - I keep one in my handbag, one in the car and one at home.
Tip #5: Eat Your Greens! Eating whole fresh fruits and vegetables (organic is Best) as opposed to sweets and processed.  Swap a Chocolate Bar with grapes, cherries or mixed nuts and swap packeted chips with carrots and celery. Or my essential- Avocado J It is just a simple and known fact that fruits and veges are filled with the goodness that your body needs. Try not to eat junk food the majority of the time just because it is easier and more convenient. Remember what you put in you will get out.

Tip #6: Stay hydrated with Fresh Water - not softdrink, black tea, or bottled juices (of course you can have those things in moderation, but not in place of water). Just think how your skin and hair would look if you only took a shower in softdrink - you would be a sticky dirty mess very shortly - that is what your insides look like if you only drink sugary drinks- and what is on your insides quickly transfers to the outside. So drink plenty of fresh water all day long and keep it in a glass or tin water bottle. NO PLASTIC.

PS: Strictly keep drinking alcohol to a bare minimum. This is a no brainer. All it will do is give you a hangover, put your organs under stress and dehydrate you and your skin severely. You can still be the life of the party drinking iced water Instead lol It will keep you replenished after you tear up that dance floor and it will also ensure that you are not stumbling home, heels in hand and being mortified the next morning at the messy photos taken of you. Keep it Classy.
Tip #7: Give Yourself Manicure & Pedicure Regularly. You don’t even need to go to the salon, just keep your nails well manicured & painted. It is really pretty and polishes off your look. Hot Pink is my signature colour but when I’m filming I go with a glossy nude shade.

Tip #8: Find your Perfect Eyebrow Shape & Maintain It. The shape of your brow is one of the most important facial
features because properly defined eyebrows will frame your eyes and make them look bigger. It also gives your face a polished look and can even create an illusion of a face lift.  Unruly bushy eyebrows that are shapeless can ruin any make-up effect you try to create and looks messy. And from experience always be clear about what you want. A great example is Megan Fox, she has great eyebrows
Tip #9: Apply Mascara. Mascara is a beauty bare necessity as it instantly opens and defines your eyes. Long and Thick Lashes make you look very pretty. I am still scouting for the Best Mascara as I have yet to find one I adore. Lancome has been the best for me so far but if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know!
Tip #10: Get your Beauty Sleep! Your skin does so much repair work at night and if you cheat yourself on sleep you are cheating your skin on it’s down time to repair and detoxify. So try for 8 hours or as close as you can get - Sweet Dreams!
*PLEASE NOTE: Before you consume or use any of the above skincare products - Read the labels and Consult with your doctor first. I am just sharing my routine that has personally worked for me. If you are not able to use or take these products due to allergies or any other reasons, please DO NOT.

Highlights of the eventful month that was...

I have been SUPER BUSY and have not had a chance to blog and now I am finally settled in my lounge room at 10pm at night and ready to tell you all about my VERY  EVENTFUL Month.

1. I am currently Nurse Ogawa on Steven Spielberg’s brand new TV Show “Terra Nova”. So I have been doing a bit of work on that here on the Gold Coast and it has been nothing short of Amazing. The sets, the locations, the cast, the directors, the crew – AMAZING! Keep an eye out for it as it will be airing on FOX in the US next week and on Channel 10 here in Australia Soon After J

2. I am also a presenter on Alive Live TV and have been interviewing some very exciting emerging Aussie Talent and Fashion Designers . To see more check out www.alivelive.tv
3. I have had quite a few auditions as well. I actually love auditioning it brings back the thrill of the chase and gets that adrenaline pumping. Notably was my audition for a coca cola TVC, where I had to do numerous bomb dives into the pool ha-ha it was pretty fun.
4. I have also worked on a Corporate Video Project with Aash Aaron, which was great. Aash is an incredible Acting Coach, Writer, Director and Producer and I love being around him and being able to pick his brains. I had my first film role in his Horror/ Thriller Feature Film I.C.U.

5. Now I also finished filming in the Sunshine Coast a Physcological Thriller– Mind Fire. I am one of the scientists “Clover”. I can’t tell you too much about the film because I am not allowed to just yet but I will keep you posted when I can.
It was an arduous and adventurous full day of filming but it will be all worth it when you see the finished product. We shot right until sunset, where I was being eaten alive by mosquitos, I had mud, blood and guts all over me and my teased up hair and I was freezing cold from being  submerged in the creek.
Due to filming on location in the bush I had nowhere to shower and I was already running late to get back to Brisbane so I just made a quick dress change.

AND NOW DO I HAVE A STORY TO TELL YOU:
I was rushing to get to the hotel to get a quick shower before I got to the Suncorp Stadium to see the Broncos Smash the Warriors Moihahah.  Now the new extensive roads and bridges in Brisbane caused my GPS to go ballistic, as it wasn’t registering it all. It kept taking me around in circles so as you can imagine I was a little distressed.

Now as I was driving back on the busy highway, my car starts to make rattling noises-and I ‘m thinking hmm that’s a bit weird, I’ll check that out on my next stop as I don’t have time to stop right now. I continue to drive however the rattling progressively gets worse- to the  point  where the whole car starts shaking. So I start to slow down to about 90Km, and I’m in the far right lane with no place to stop on the right side. And before I even had a chance to change lanes and pull over, my back left TIRE COMPLETELY FALLS OFF and rolls in front of me at high speed. So there I am on the road hysterical, swerving to miss other cars sparks flying…Thankfully I did not collide with any cars other and I managed to maneuver the car the left side of the road and no one was hurt!

As I am trying to collect myself and get a grip of what actually happened, a car pulls over about 300m in front of me and a man hops out of the car. I’m thinking yay someone has stopped to help me!  As I get out of my car and walk towards him, I see him pick up my tire,
but instead of giving it to me, he throws my tire into his car and drives off...
YES HE STOLE MY TYRE???!!! WTF!!!  WHY???

SO there I am standing on the side of the road in the freezing cold, shaken up and completely bewildered. Thinking did that jus t actually happen? And Yes it did!
In any case my boyfriend who was already at the game, who just sat down to watch it, had to come get me. We had to get the car towed back home to the Gold Coast and Unfortunately we both missed the game but the good thing was that the Broncos Won!
We then just went back to the hotel in North Quay Brisbane; I had a long hot bath and went straight to bed as I was completely exhausted.
We had to wake up bright and early the next morning to get back to the Sunshine Coast for the last day of filming. So we checked out of the hotel and went outside to where my boyfriend had to park his Ute (he had to park it outside because it was too big to fit in the underground car park), only to find that the whole right side of his car got “keyed”! His brand new Ute that just got his company signage on the car! I KNOW RIGHT! Just our luck! It was so not cool. Who even does that anymore??
So needless to say that was a horrible start to the day.
Luckily the rest of the day ran smoothly on location!

Now that was just the highlights of the month so far and I think that is enough Goss for one session- Ill be back soon I promise :)
